The Scriptural Foundation Of Stewardship & Faithfulness

A church capital campaign, rightly understood, is not a departure from the life of the Church, but an expression of it.

From the beginning, the people of God have been entrusted with the care of what has been given into their hands. The language of Scripture is not ownership, but of stewardship which is receiving with thanksgiving and returning with faithfulness. The Church continues in this pattern, discerning in each generation how best to order its common life for the sake of worship, witness, and service.

Parables & Precedent: From Matthew 25 to 1 Chronicles 29

In the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14–30), the emphasis falls not on success as the world defines it, but on faithfulness. What has been entrusted is not to be set aside or preserved unchanged, but engaged with care and responsibility. The question is not simply what has been given, but how it is received and used.

A similar posture is evident in 1 Chronicles 29, where the people prepare for the building of the temple. Their offering is marked by a recognition that all things come from God, and that what is given is, in truth, being returned. Their generosity is neither compelled nor casual but is ordered, intentional, and rooted in reverence.

The Church’s life today is no different.

Integrating A Capital Campaign Into The Spiritual Life Of The Church

At times, the needs before a congregation require deliberate and shared effort, whether to tend to the fabric of its buildings, to relieve burdens that hinder its ministry, or to make provision for what lies ahead. A capital campaign, in this sense, is not merely a means to an end, but a way in which a community orders itself together under a common purpose.

This purpose calls for prayer, for clarity, and for a willingness to act, not out of urgency alone, but in trust. It asks the Church to consider what has been entrusted to it, and how those gifts may be rightly used for the sake of the life it has been given to share. When approached in this way, a capital campaign does not stand apart from the Church’s spiritual life. It belongs to it.

8 Principles For Conducting A Capital Campaign Within The Church

  1. Begin With Prayer & Discernment
Not all needs require the same response. Take time to listen, to reflect, and to seek clarity before acting.
  2. Name The Purpose With Care
Speak plainly about what is needed and why. Let the purpose be proportionate, grounded, and connected to the Church’s ongoing life.
  3. Rely On Steady Leadership
The work should be guided by those who are trusted within the community such as the individuals who carry both responsibility and humility.
  4. Teach Stewardship In Its Proper Sense
Stewardship is not a moment, but a way of life. It is shaped by gratitude, restraint, and an awareness that all things are held in trust.
  5. Invite A Measured Response
Allow space for individuals and families to consider their participation thoughtfully and prayerfully.
  6. Maintain Clarity & Accountability
Speak openly about progress and use of funds. Order and transparency serve the good of the whole.
  7. Mark The Work With Thanksgiving
Give thanks not only at the end, but along the way by recognizing what has been provided and what has been shared.
  8. Carry The Work Forward Faithfully
The conclusion of a campaign is not the end of responsibility, but its continuation.
