First Lutheran Church, Algona, Iowa
Capital campaigns are about funding projects and also about restoring confidence, clarity, and momentum in a congregation’s shared mission. First Lutheran Church in Algona, Iowa offers a strong example of how thoughtful discernment and planning can lead to extraordinary results, even in a small-church setting.
Facing urgent facility repairs, unplanned debt, long-term maintenance concerns, and the need to fund a pastoral leadership search, First Lutheran recognized that these challenges could not be addressed piecemeal without placing future ministry at risk. Instead, church leadership partnered with Walsh & Associates to conduct a Feasibility & Planning Study, creating a clear roadmap rooted in congregational input, financial realities, and long-term vision
That careful preparation led directly into the Together in Faith at First capital campaign in partnership with Walsh. The campaign focused on four critical priorities: eliminating debt, addressing deferred building maintenance, establishing a dedicated maintenance fund, and proactively supporting the search for pastoral leadership. Each priority reflected both immediate needs and a commitment to sustainability which would ensure the church could care for its facilities without recurring crises and support strong spiritual leadership for years to come.
The campaign results were remarkable. Congregational support was strong and unified, with members responding generously to a clear and well-defined plan. The campaign exceeded its Challenge Goal and raised 3.13 times annual giving! The results delighted and surprised this small church, showing both confidence in leadership and deep commitment to its future.
Perhaps most importantly, the campaign energized the congregation. What began as a response to urgent needs became a shared expression of faith, responsibility, and hope. Guided by Walsh & Associates, First Lutheran Church strengthened its financial and physical foundation and renewed its readiness to serve, worship, and lead with confidence in the Algona community.
