When Your Church Considers a Capital Campaign, Stewardship Calls Us to Aim Higher
“For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away… Cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness.” — Matthew 25:24–30
Over the years, I’ve had countless conversations with churches as they prepare for a capital campaign. And more often than I’d like to admit, I’ll hear something like:
“If we really wanted to raise more money, we would have hired Walsh & Associates. But we chose a different option.”
Every time, I’m left scratching my head. Why would a church, especially one that believes deeply in stewardship, choose to settle for less than the best outcome? Why aim lower when God calls us to use our gifts fully and faithfully?
Stewardship Is About More Than Making Do
Good stewardship isn’t about doing the bare minimum. It’s about maximizing the resources, talents, and opportunities God has entrusted to us. In the Parable of the Talents, Jesus honors the servants who did the most with what they were given. They invested. They multiplied. They moved forward with courage and faith. And God rewarded them for it.
That parable shapes the foundation of our company and our work with churches. It reminds us, and should remind every church, that God desires growth, excellence, and intentional effort. He wants us to keep improving, keep striving, and keep using every opportunity to expand ministry impact.
Doing Your Best Is Part of Your Witness
If your church teaches stewardship from the pulpit, it should also model stewardship in its leadership decisions. When your church undertakes a capital campaign, the goal shouldn’t simply be “enough to get by.” The goal should be raising what you truly need, and then some, so your ministry can thrive, expand, and bless your community more fully.
Every church has needs. But every church also has possibilities, the ministry dreams that could become reality with the right resources in place.
Raise More Now, Do More Later
A strong, well-run campaign doesn’t just help you meet immediate needs, it reduces the number of campaigns you’ll need in the future. When a church commits to doing a campaign with excellence, it positions itself to:
- Complete more ministry projects
- Make facility improvements that last
- Create breathing room for future vision
- Prevent “campaign fatigue” among members
In other words, doing your best the first time is both spiritually wise and practically smart.
Think Bigger. Aim Higher. Steward Well.
Ultimately, good stewardship means seeking God’s best, not settling for the minimum. When churches enter a capital campaign with the mindset of doing all they can, they not only raise more money… They strengthen their congregation, expand their vision, and open the door for God to bless their ministry in new ways. So when it’s your church’s turn to consider a capital campaign, remember this: Don’t aim for the minimum. Aim for your God-given best.
