Campaign Purpose
Adding on to St. James’ existing church building had been a welcomed way to both honor their heritage and provide for their future. And, going into debt for the expansion at the time they did was wise because both construction and financing costs were extremely reasonable.
The parish first hired Walsh to conduct a feasibility and planning study to estimate support and plans for a campaign from their English & Spanish bilingual congregation. Using the information gathered they refined their plans and moved into their Fulfilling Our Promise / Compliendo Nuestra Promesa capital campaign.
Debt/Deuda
Taking on debt for the church expansion was smart, but staying in debt was not good stewardship – it was adversely affecting their ability to live up to their God-given potential. The campaign ‘s primary goal was to pay off their mortgage debt. Doing so would make the hundreds of thousands of dollars of annual debt payments available for other purposes. The campaign informed and educated the congregation on Important needs like expanded parking, stained-glass window repairs, finishing the steeple, and building a playground. It showed them how freedom from debt could allow the parish to expand their programs, services, ministries, and out-reach programs. In particular the funds could provide for a possible youth-ministry position and restoring art and Spanish classes.
Campaign Success/Éxito de la campaña
First achieving their minimum goal, and then through the ongoing generosity and blessings of their members, the parish was able to rejoice and give thanks together at their Debt Payoff Celebration!
